Fire Extinguisher Hydro Test Explained

A hydro (hydrostatic) test checks that the extinguisher cylinder can still safely hold its pressure. Here is why it matters, how to know when it is due, how it is done and what it costs in Pune.

A Pressure Test for the Cylinder

Refilling replaces the extinguishing agent. A hydro test is different: it tests the cylinder itself. The empty cylinder is filled with water and pressurised above its normal working pressure in a test rig. If it leaks or stretches permanently, it has failed and must be taken out of service.

It is due every 2, 3 or 5 years depending on the type of extinguisher (see the table below), and the last test date is marked on the cylinder or in the service record. During the yearly service we check these dates and tell you which cylinders are due. A cylinder that is dented, rusted or has been through a fire should be tested before it is used again, whatever the date.

How Often: Hydro Test Intervals

Why Cylinders Are Tested

🛡️

Cylinder safety

An extinguisher is a pressure vessel. Rust inside or metal fatigue cannot be seen from outside — the test finds it.

✅

Reliable discharge

A cylinder that holds pressure is one that will discharge properly when it is needed.

📋

Records & audits

Test dates are part of the extinguisher record that auditors, insurers and Form B inspections look at.
