How to choose and look after a lithium battery extinguisher
Where to use it
Lithium-ion batteries are found in EVs, e-bikes and scooters, UPS and battery rooms, power tools, laptops and phones. Lithium battery extinguishers are meant for areas where these batteries are charged, stored or repaired — EV parking and charging bays, battery stores and service centres.
Why battery fires are different
A damaged lithium-ion cell can overheat in a chain reaction and re-ignite even after the flames are knocked down. Cooling is essential. If a battery pack is burning, raise the alarm, evacuate the area and call the fire brigade (101 or 112) while using the extinguisher only if it is safe to do so.
Care and servicing
Place the extinguisher near charging points and battery stores, check it monthly and have it serviced as per the manufacturer's instructions. Good charging practice — certified chargers, no overnight charging in corridors, and ventilated areas — prevents most battery fires.

Can a normal extinguisher put out a lithium battery fire?
A standard extinguisher may knock down the flames, but damaged cells can re-ignite. Purpose-made agents and cooling reduce that risk. Always evacuate and call the fire brigade for a burning battery pack.
