Fire Extinguisher Expiry Date: Does It Expire?
There is no single expiry date to look for. Here is how to read the label and service tag, when an extinguisher needs refilling, when it must be replaced, and a one-minute check anyone can do.

It Is About the Due Dates, Not an Expiry Date
A fire extinguisher does not stop working on a fixed date. It stops being reliable when it is not serviced, after it has been used, or when the cylinder is damaged. That is why every extinguisher carries dates you should check — and why buildings keep a service record for each one.
If you have an extinguisher at home or at work and do not know when it was last serviced, treat it as due. In Pune and PCMC we pick it up, check it and tell you before doing any work.
Three Dates to Look For
Manufacturing date
Printed on the label or cylinder. It tells you how old the cylinder is — not when it stops working.
Last service & next due
The service tag shows when it was last refilled or serviced and when the next service is due. This is the date to watch.
Hydro test date
When the cylinder was last pressure-tested. It is due every 2, 3 or 5 years depending on the type — see our hydro test guide.
When to Refill and When to Replace
Refill when
- It has been used, even for a few seconds — the pressure drops and the powder can block the valve.
- The gauge needle is outside the green zone, or the pin or tamper seal is missing.
- A CO₂ extinguisher weighs less than it should (CO₂ has no gauge, so it is weighed).
- The service due date on the tag has passed.
Replace when
- The cylinder fails the hydro test — it is condemned and must not be refilled.
- There is rust, dents, bulging or a leak on the cylinder, or the valve or hose is damaged.
- The type no longer suits the risk — for example a water extinguisher near electrical panels.
- Spare parts for that model are no longer available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not in the way medicine does. What matters is the service and refill due date on the service tag, the hydro test due date for the cylinder, and the condition of the extinguisher. A well-maintained extinguisher stays in service; a neglected one can fail even if it looks new.
After any use, even a short one, and whenever the gauge needle is outside the green zone. Every extinguisher should also be serviced once a year, and CO₂ extinguishers are checked by weight, not by a gauge.
Age alone does not decide it. Check that it has been serviced every year and hydro-tested when due for its type, and that the cylinder has no rust, dents or a damaged valve. If you are not sure, ask us to check it.
